The Basic HIV/AIDS Program helps people take steps to prevent
the spread of HIV. Basic HIV/AIDS Program: Fundamentals provides
the opportunity to openly discuss the facts about HIV and
AIDS and personalize the facts so they become more meaningful.
It's a good way to encourage people to adopt prevention behaviors
to protect themselves and others from HIV. Basic HIV/AIDS
Program: Prevention Skills can help people develop and practice
skills that they can use in real life situations to protect
themselves and others from HIV. Red Cross-trained instructors
can conduct sessions of the Basic HIV/AIDS Program in your
community.
HIV/AIDS
Programs for Youth
AIDS is one of the leading causes of death for Americans
between the ages of 25 and 44, according to the CDC. It is
widely believed that most people in their twenties who have
AIDS actually became infected with HIV in their teenage years.
All of the American Red Cross HIV/AIDS programs provide opportunities
for reaching youth. We have developed videos, brochures, workbooks,
comic books, and other materials that encourage young people
and the adults in their lives to openly discuss HIV prevention.
The American Red Cross approach involves providing age-appropriate
HIV/AIDS education from an early age through adolescence and
young adulthood.
Act SMART
Help young people make smart decisions and develop healthy
behaviors to prevent HIV and AIDS and gain a sense of compassion
for persons living with HIV or AIDS. The curriculum is divided
into three units: for ages 6 to 9, 10 to 13, and 14 to 17.
The Party
This video package provides HIV-prevention education materials
for people ages 13 to 15. The Party can help youth enhance
their decision-making skills related to HIV prevention. Issues
raised include peer pressure, alcohol and drug use, sexual
activity, and self-respect.

of an HIV/AIDS program at their places of work. The Business
Responds to AIDS Labor Leader’s Kit provides the tools

HIV/AIDS
African American Programs
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC), in the United States, the impact of HIV and AIDS in
the African American community has been devastating. Through
June 2001, CDC had received reports of 774,467 AIDS cases
- of those, 292,522 cases occurred among African Americans.
Representing only an estimated 12 percent of the total U.S.
population, African Americans make up almost 38 percent of
all AIDS cases reported in this country.
The American Red Cross continues its efforts to help African
American communities prepare for tomorrow by preventing the
further spread of HIV today through the culturally-specific
African American HIV/AIDS Program. The African American HIV/AIDS
Program was developed under the leadership of African American
employees and volunteers of the Red Cross working in partnership
with the National Urban League. The program provides educational
strategies and guidance for facilitating skill-building activities
to encourage and support prevention behaviors.
